Dallas Cowboys Website Video Now Supports iPhone and iPad Playback
Irving, Texas, October 6, 2010 - The Dallas Cowboys have a well-deserved reputation in the NFL for being forerunners in adopting and supporting new technologies, as is evident in the stunningly modern design and construction of Cowboys Stadium, with its massive Diamond Vision display. Given the recent growth in the use of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and their big cousin, the new iPad, the Cowboys have once again proven their technological leadership by implementing the latest web technologies on the Cowboys’ website to support these popular devices.
Until recently, videos on the Cowboys’ website were only available in the Flash format, as is the case with many websites, including those of other NFL teams. These videos were not viewable on the iPhone/ iPad, which do not support Flash. Apple, the creators of the iPhone/iPad, has elected to forego Flash support in favor of a new emerging web standard known as HTML 5.
The Cowboys’ partnered with Network Foundation Technologies (NiFTy), a rapidly emerging provider of state-of-the-art online broadcasting services and technologies, to redesign and implement the Cowboys’ website to support video and multimedia playback on Apple portable devices (provided the viewer uses a WiFi or 3G mobile connection with sufficient bandwidth).
The website redesign, based on the latest HTML 5 web standard, was completed at the end of July. All videos in the Multimedia Center section of the site added since that time are now accessible on the iPhone/iPad. Viewers simply navigate to the site as normal using the Safari web browser on their Apple portable device, and select a video. Playback is supported in both portrait and landscape modes.
